Overcoming (Artistic) Fears

Abstracted Horse: Colour Pencil (Koh-I-Noor Polychromos) on canvas board.

First off, I'm no expert on overcoming fear.

I spend more time in a chair by the fireplace perusing art tutorials than actually creating art. This is largely because I'm afraid to start - and probably fail disastrously - something that scares me.
I am, however, determined to turn this pattern on it's head.

Today I decided that I really must get over my fear of some aspects of oil painting, before I delve into it tooth and nail. I usually have to sneak up on myself to accomplish these things and today was not different.

I had a spare, cheap 5"x 7" canvas board hanging about my table and so I began a sketch in coloured pencil which I then used Odorless Turpenoid (a turpentine substitute but I really have no idea what the differences are!) to blend and create some washiness.

I enjoyed it! I think it's a good, wee beginning (even though the piece is still in progress) (Edit - finished it I think)

What do you do to overcome your fears?
